Hakone, Kanagawa
Hakone is well-known for Onsen. Hot springs can be found in day spas, hotels, Ryokan, and even youth hostels, as well as freely flowing in Ashi-Yu (foot baths). This is the primary reason for people to visit Hakone.
One of the best spots to spot Fuji is the south shore of Lake Ashi, a caldera lake that was inundated by an eruption of Mount Hakone some 3000 years ago. The vermilion Torii gate of Hakone Shrine, which is seen rising from the water, is also picturesque.

Hakone Open Air Museum/箱根彫刻の森美術館
The Hakone Open Air Museum is successful in achieving a balance between nature and art by exhibiting various sculptures on its grounds, with views of the surrounding valley and mountains. There are different sections and exhibition spaces in the museum, both indoors and outdoors.
The Picasso Exhibition Hall is a space that demonstrates two stories of the artist's paintings, sculptures, and ceramic works, as well as photographs of him at various points in his life.
Outside, the museum's green lawns are dotted with abstract sculptures by Japanese and international artists. The Symphonic Sculpture is one of the largest pieces. Visitors can access a viewing platform with views of the park and the surrounding mountains by ascending a spiral staircase that is more like a tower than a sculpture.

Hakone Shrine/箱根神社
The Hakone Shrine stands at the foot of Mount Hakone, along the shores of Lake Ashinoko. Although the shrine buildings are hidden in the dense forest, they are well-represented by their enormous Torii gates, one of which stands prominently in the lake and two more over the main street of Moto-Hakone.
From the Torii gate in Lake Ashinoko, a path leads through the forest to the main building, which sits amidst tall trees and is peacefully situated. Throughout the year, the shrine is beautiful, and it's especially breathtaking when covered in mist.
One of Mount Hakone's various peaks is home to a second shrine called Mototsumiya ("original shrine") that stands at the summit of Komagatake. The Hakone Komagatake Ropeway from Hakone-en or hiking trails can make it reachable.

Kusatsu, Gunma
One of Japan's most renowned hot spring resorts is Kusatsu Onsen. The abundance of high-quality hot spring water in this area is reputed to cure any illness.
Kusatsu was already popular as a hot spring resort for many centuries, but German doctor Erwin von Baelz increased its popularity even more by recommending it for its water's health benefits during the late 1800s.
The mountains of Gunma Prefecture are where Kusatsu is located, located 1200 meters above sea level and offers skiing and hiking during the winter and summer seasons, which can be enjoyed along with hot spring bathing.
Kusatsu spots
Kusatsu Hot Spring Baths/草津温泉
Kusatsu has the most significant natural flow of hot spring water in Japan, which includes the water that emerges at the Yubatake in the town center. For centuries, the sulfurous, highly acidic waters have been viewed as among the best in Japan, and the resort town has consistently been at the top of the Onsen rankings.
The quality and quantity of Kusatsu's waters make it a challenge to beat. The Ryokan baths across the town also allow for the enjoyment of Kussu's waters. Guests who stay at certain Ryokans have the freedom to use their baths for free during their entire stay, but non-staying visitors can access their baths during the daytime for a fee of typically 500 to 1500 yen.

Yumomi Performance/湯もみ
To preserve the special qualities of Kusatsu's hot spring water, Yumomi is the centuries-old method used to cool it down to bathing temperature without diluting it with cold water.
By stirring the water with large wooden paddles, a troupe of locals incorporate traditional folk songs and dance into the process to achieve cooling. Yumomi performances take place every day in the Netsunoyu building near Yubatake.
Some audience members are given the chance to participate in the stirring and they last around half an hour.

Nikko, Tochigi
Nikko is a city of Tochigi prefecture, which is situated at the entry of Nikko National Park, widely recognized for Toshogu, Japan's most extravagantly decorated shrine, and the resting place of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa dynasty.
For many centuries, Shikoku was a hub of Shinto and Buddhist mountain worship before Toshogu was constructed in the 1600s, and today, Nikko National Park remains a haven for scenic mountainous landscapes, lakes, waterfalls, hot springs, wild monkeys, and hiking trails.
Nikko spots
Toshogu Shrine/日光東照宮
Toshogu Shrine is a stunning tribute to Tokugawa Ieyasu, who led the Tokugawa Shogunate for more than 250 years until 1868. Tosho Daigongen, or Great Deity of the East Shining Light, is the name given to Ieyasu at Toshogu.
Toshogu was initially a simple mausoleum, but it was expanded into the stunning complex that we see today by Ieyasu's grandson Iemitsu in the first half of the 17th century.More than a dozen buildings set in a beautiful forest form the lavishly decorated shrine complex.
The buildings were decorated in a way that was not seen elsewhere in Japan, where simplicity has traditionally been emphasised in shrine architecture, with countless wood carvings and large amounts of gold leaf.

The current Shinkyo was constructed in 1636. Until 1973, Shinkyo was off-limits to the general public. The late 1990s and early 2000s saw extensive renovation work, and now visitors can cross the bridge and return for an entrance fee.
