Nagoya Castle

Nagoya Castle was built at the beginning of the Edo Period (1603-1868) as the seat of one of the three branches of the ruling Tokugawa family, the Owari branch. Consequently, it was one of the largest castles in Japan, and the town around it became Japan's fourth largest city.
The park surrounding the castle features two circles of moats and impressive walls with corner turrets. The cherry blossom season, which usually occurs in late March or early April, makes it an attractive Hanami spot.

Tokugawa-En Garden

The legacy of the Tokugawa clan is closely linked to the history of Tokugawa-en. In 1695, the garden was built with the intention of being a retirement villa for Tokugawa Mitsutomo, the second lord of the Owari Tokugawa family.
Tokugawa Garden was not open to the public until 2004 when it was fully restored and reopened. The restoration was aimed at recapturing the garden's former splendor while adapting it for modern visitors. Today, the garden is a stunning mix of historical authenticity and modern accessibility, providing a one-of-a-kind look into the aesthetic sensibilities of feudal Japan.

Have lunch

Iwasyo is a long-established store that has been in business for over 110 years. The traditional taste and manufacturing method of handmade Udon noodles have made them so popular that there is often a line.
You can enjoy a variety of Udon, such as miso-simmered Udon, tempura Udon, and curry Udon. In addition to the miso stewed udon, the miso katsudon is also a popular dish among regulars. If you have room, try both udon and katsudon.

Atsuta Shrine

One of the most significant shrines in Shinto is Atsuta Shrine. The Sun Goddess Amaterasu is enshrined in it and the sacred sword Kusanagi, which is one of the three imperial regalia, is stored. It should be noted that the sword is not shown to the public.
The Kusanagi-Kahn, a museum that was recently opened in 2021, provides visitors with additional information about the shrine's connection to swords. The museum hall, which is interestingly designed, displays over a dozen historical swords of various sizes from the shrine's large collection, as well as a hands-on corner where visitors can lift some sample swords.

Osu Kannon

In central Nagoya, Osu Kannon is a well-known Buddhist temple. The temple was initially built during the Kamakura Period (1192-1333) in Gifu Prefecture, but it was relocated by Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1612 because it was repeatedly damaged by flooding.
The temple's main attraction is a wooden Kannon statue that was sculpted by Kobo Daishi, a prominent figure in Japanese Buddhism. The Shinpukuji Library, which has over 15,000 classic Japanese and Chinese texts, is located beneath Osu Kannon's main hall. These texts contain multiple national treasures and important cultural properties, one of which is the oldest copy of the Kojiki, a history of Japan that includes its mythological origins.
