Tokyo's best gourmet food

Edomae Sushi

Edomae Sushi

"Edomae sushi" came to be called this because before the Edo period, fish caught in Edo Bay (present-day Tokyo Bay) was used as an ingredient for sushi. To extend their lifespan, they were seasoned with vinegar or salt or tossed in the sauce due to their incomplete development, as stated.

According to legend, the dish was created by impatient Edo people who combined rice and toppings and served them at food stalls to fill their stomachs in a short amount of time.

Tsukishima Monja

Tsukishima Monja

During the Edo period, 'Tsukishima Monja' was created. It is said to have its roots in ``mange-yaki,'' which involves dissolving flour with water and placing it on a griddle to draw letters and pictures.

Today, Monjayaki was a popular snack for children at candy shops in Tsukishima. It's believed to have originated as a dish that was made by melting wheat flour, frying it thinly, and then being dipped in soy sauce or miso.

Tsukishima Nishinaka Dori Shopping Street (commonly known as Monja Street) has over 80 monjayaki restaurants.

Sweet Rice Cracker

Sweet Rice Cracker

This Japanese sweet from Tokyo is made by steaming rice, roasting it to puff it up, and mixing it with starch syrup, sugar, peanuts, and other ingredients, and it is known for its crunchy texture.

The origin of it is believed to be in the late Edo period, when street vendors near Asakusa Kaminarimon Gate began selling it as a luck charm, and it is regarded as a souvenir from Asakusa.
